Welcome to Velocity Global’s Employee Spotlight Series, where we introduce some of the members of the Velocity Global team!

Meet Mirjam

Hi, I’m Mirjam. I joined Velocity Global in 2021. I am a Senior Specialist in Invoicing and Collections in the Finance department. My responsibilities include managing the invoicing side of the business, ensuring payroll charges and fees are billed to our customers, and confirming that payments are received on time. I also maintain supported employees’ profiles, issue credit memos, and work directly with customers to address their questions and concerns about invoicing.

The most fulfilling part about my job is ensuring that our customers are satisfied and their concerns are solved efficiently. I get to build strong relationships with customers and help them navigate invoicing issues or concerns, which brings a rewarding sense of accomplishment.

Mirjam’s career journey

I previously worked in a corporate bank’s lending department, handling high-balance loans and their maintenance. It was a very strict working environment. Before that, I worked in car finance within the collections department. I started as a Collections Specialist and later advanced to a Collections Support Specialist position. This high-level role involved dealing with repossessions, bankruptcies, bereavement, auction houses, and external agencies, among other responsibilities.

When I considered joining Velocity Global, I was intrigued by the company’s offerings and diverse business opportunities. The term “employer of record” was new to me, and I found it fascinating. Additionally, the possibility of working remotely while connecting with people worldwide made the company especially appealing. As an Estonian living in Italy who does not speak perfect Italian, I am grateful for the job and the opportunity to work for Velocity Global.

Since joining, I have had many growth opportunities. I started out as a Client Finance Specialist and became the Senior Specialist on the team. As the only person based in the EU on my team, I have learned to work independently and make decisions autonomously, as there may not always be direct support or guidance from colleagues in the same time zone. I have also been the point of contact for many other teams for escalations or urgent questions.

Working in a customer-facing role

I am more confident when communicating with customers and addressing their inquiries and questions about invoicing and fees. I am very good at identifying issues and resolving discrepancies. While I can recall many moments that felt valuable to me, I appreciate every time
I successfully resolve complex invoicing issues for customers, ensuring their satisfaction and trust in our solutions.

For example, I dealt with a customer who had many past invoicing issues and concerns. As a result, they had not been paying invoices. I worked closely with them and our internal team to get all the necessary information and resolve the issue. At the beginning of the communication, the customer was very unhappy with us and even contemplated ending the business relationship. However, we managed to turn the situation around and keep the customer happy.

Living our values every day

Win as a Team is the value I resonate the most with at a personal level. I regularly put it into practice in my day-to-day work by proactively resolving issues or questions and working alongside all the other team members worldwide. I mostly work independently during the EU time zone as many of my team members are based in the Americas, which means I often collaborate with other teams and customers during my time zone to get things resolved promptly.

Leading with Curiosity doesn’t come naturally to me, especially welcoming the unknown. I am the type of person who likes to have stability and everything set in place. While working at Velocity Global, I have had to change my perspective on this as the business is ever-changing, and the same goes for my work responsibilities.

Advice for new Velocity Global team members

Come with a curious mind, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to reach out to people from other departments or teams. Everyone in Velocity Global is friendly and welcoming and will always be happy to help. We are part of a promising industry, and I think EOR will become increasingly important. EOR allows companies to hire the talent they want, regardless of where they live. EOR also benefits employees by allowing them to work for a wider range of companies they otherwise would not have an opportunity to.

A fun fact about Mirjam

I love traveling and visiting new places. I have visited more than 20 countries and love learning about different cultures. Usually, when I am on holiday, I imagine I could live there and stop at every real estate agency window to check their available properties. I also start planning my next holiday!

Recently, I found a new love for hiking in the mountains. Until 2021, I had never been close to an actual mountain, and now I can’t seem to get enough of them.
